Street Art and slick hair

The art: I'm a firm believer that beauty exists everywhere, you just have to search for it at times. From an early age, I developed an appreciation for murals. I love how someone can take what might have been been perceived as an ugly or plain wall and transform it into something beautiful. For the past four years, I have traveled through downtown Trenton and often admired its many murals in passing. However, I never had time to just walk around down there and explore the art until two weeks ago. My friends and I decided to take a morning to explore the art and snapped some pictures along the way. We also ventured into an alleyway where we found even more murals! Above are just a couple of the many murals we admired throughout the morning. So, if you're ever looking for some art to admire in the central New Jersey area, I urge you explore Trenton!

The hair: My hair is natural and I often wear it in protective styles for two reasons: to retain length and becuase I'm too busy to do my hair every day. When I have papers, projects, exams to study for, and meetings, my hair is not on the top of my priority list. Thus, I usually select a day to put my hair in a style where it will last me for at least a week or two. Throughout most of my college years, my protective style of choice was two-strand twists. Why? Because they're easy to do, last for a couple weeks, and leave me with a fabulous twist-out afterwards. However, I've gotten bored with my twists over the past year and have been taking time to wear other protective styles. This slicked back bun is one of my new favorites. While this style looks easy, it took a immense amount of patience! My hair is thick and tightly coiled which makes it very difficult to style at times. However, with the help of a wide-toothed comb, a brush, aloe vera juice, ecostyler argan oil gel, and a few hair ties, I was able to achieve this style in about two hours (because detangling my hair can literally last for hours lol)!

Feeling Springy!

The weather was perfect this Saturday! I'm so happy that the spring weather is finally sticking. I often dress according to the season/weather and my mood. Needless to say the 77 degree weather was beautiful this Saturday and I was in a great mood. Thus, I decided to go for a bright springy color-blocked look for my time outside.

When I went to bed at almost 3am Saturday morning after washing, detangling, and styling my hair (naturals, you know the struggle), I envisioned wearinga  defined and voluminous braid out on Saturday. However, my hair didn't dry properly so my hair turned out in an afro when I unbraided it. Disclaimer: my hair has a mind of its own. Thus, I pulled my afro into a puff. A puff is usually one of my go-to styles when by braid-out or twist-out don't come out the way I envision.

Sleeveless Coat

Hello! I hope you had a beautiful weekend. The weather was nice here in New Jersey so I took advantage of it and spent a lot of time outside. I was looking for an affordable sleeveless coat all winter, but could not find one within my budget. However, I was reading one of my favorite blogs (mirrorme.me) last month and saw that Fisayo posted a link to this sleeveless coat. I immediately knew I had to have it ('cause nothing haunts you like the things you wish you bought but didn't). Three weeks later, it arrived! This coat has instantly become one of my favorite outwear pieces and I plan to get a few more wears out of it before the weather gets too warm. However, you can expect to see me in this sleeveless coat frequently when fall arrives.

I wear a lot of neutrals, and black is my absolute favorite because of its versatility. However, I sometimes like to offset my otherwise all black looks with a color or two. This weekend, I chose to pair my black outfit with a camel sleeveless coat. I spent a lot of time running around and this was an easy and comfortable outfit. My weekend was also busy because I spent time shooting for a new project that I'm working on with on with my friend Kia. I can't wait to share more with you when the details are finalized, so stay tuned! In the mean time, here's a sneak peak of our shoot together:
